The CLIL Approach
Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) refers to an educational approach that allows for improved foreign language learning in combination with content learning in a variety of (non-language) subjects. CLIL is recognized as a successful approach to language teaching and learning around the world. Research shows that language learning is more effective when it is combined with content learning in another subject other than the language being learned. CLIL has been shown to improve students’ language proficiency, without negatively impacting the development of either the students’ first language, or their performance in the subject area being taught. CLIL enables learners to encounter language in context and to use it for authentic communication. The emphasis in CLIL is on learning the content of the subject and not on grammatical accuracy in the target language. CLIL views language as the vehicle for learning.
According to Coyle’s 4Cs curriculum (1999), a successful CLIL approach should include the following four elements:
1. Content,
2. Communication,
3. Cognition, and
4. Culture.

JEMUN and the CLIL Approach
For ESL and EFL learners, participation in a Model UN conference is Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). It requires in-depth research on an assigned country and the global issues being discussed, the use of critical thinking and negotiation skills to find solutions to real-world problems, and the utilization and development of academic language skills. JEMUN's inclusive MUN process and the CLIL approach to teaching and learning go hand in hand.
CLIL Teaching and Learning Convention (CLIL TALC)
The CLIL Teaching and Learning Convention (CLIL TALC) was created to bring together researchers and practitioners to share and discuss good practice, practical ideas for the classroom and effective ways of teaching, in order to increase the motivation, confidence and progress of our students. For more information about presenting at or attending CLIL TALC, please see the schedule, venue, and registration details below.
