Jay Hartwell
Jay Hartwell has been a journalism and communications professional in Hawaiʻi for 39 years and is now working as an independent media educator and consultant in Hawaiʻi and Asia.
His career began as a reporter for Honolulu's morning newspaper, then as the author of the state's 1996 Book of the Year on the modern native Hawaiian community and a communications officer for the Honolulu City Council. For 20 years, he was the award-winning faculty adviser to student media programs at the University of Hawaiʻi, where he trained and mentored students to become reporters and public relations executives.
In 2013-2014, he took a professional leave to serve as a Fulbright Scholar in Vietnam, where he conducted journalism workshops for professionals and university students. Every summer since and full-time since his university retirement October 31, 2017, he has presented media workshops and seminars at universities and conferences in Hong Kong, Seoul, Busan, Singapore, Osaka, Tokyo, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, Hanoi and Thimpu, Bhutan.
