Newspaper Journalists
At the 2021 JEMUN Conference, Newspaper Journalists will follow the planning to production steps shown below.
Step #1: Learn about the agenda topic you will be reporting on before you come to the conference by reading books, doing research online, and learning new important vocabulary. If you will be interviewing a guest speaker, make sure you do research about them before the conference.
Step #2: With your journalist partner, brainstorm the event/situation/happening/subject you’d like to report on. Some of this brainstorming can be done in advance, but a majority of it will be done at the conference.
Step #3: Once you have a specific direction and focus on what you and your partner would like to report on, plan the outline of your story with your partner.
Step #4: Make a list of your potential sources. This is where you will get the credible information you need to write a trustworthy news article.
Step #5: Interview your sources by sending them a message in Chat and inviting them to your reporting room. Verify the information received.
Step #6: Write you lead with your partner. This can be the most important news or most interesting thing that comes out of your session. The lead is reinforced by the second paragraph a quote that comes from the speaker who provided the most important news or most interesting thing that comes out of your session. The third paragraph is called a "nut graph" that provides the context for the most important news/most interesting thing. This paragraph includes the who, what, when, where, why and how: who made the statement, why was it made, how, when and where was it made. The rest of the article adds details so the reader can learn more about this news or thing that you have chosen in your lead.
Step #7: Finish editing your writing according to the JEMUN Journalism guidelines.
Step #8: Get your article, title, and photos checked by a newspaper advisor.
Step #9: Save your article as a word document and name it with your meeting room and article #.
Example: meeting room two, third article would be: M2(A3).pdf .
Step #10: Send your article and photos (if any) to the Newspaper Advisor and the magazine journalist in your meeting room.
Step #11: Give your partner a high five and start brainstorming your next story!
